speed at which a modem can transfer information, usually given in bits
per second (bps). The higher the data transfer rate, the faster the modem,
but the more it costs. A faster modem can save you money by cutting down
on your long-distance charges. Three common speeds for modems are 9,600
bps, 14,400 bps, and 28,800 bps.
